SW PvP... bleh
  • Well, not totally blah. I enjoyed it a bit when I was leveling from 40 to 50, because I had gear, talents, and abilities that made me more survivable than the lower level players, which meant I could focus on strategy and teamwork. At level 50 it seems like most everyone else has a bunch of their PvP gear, as they can take me completely unloading on them while they fight someone else, without any noticeable drop in health (and no healer taking care of them). Doing the the hellish grind to get PvP gear just gets me back to where I was pre-50, so I will probably stop playing for now. It isn't just that we lose more, or I am not getting as many commendations as before, as I actually am doing better now that I focus more on just farming medals because I can't actually do anything useful, but the game just isn't much fun for me, in its current form. Not having much interest in the PvE endgame content either means I am back to alts... or other things.
  • You do realize that, quite literally, tomorrow they're changing the grind to be less grindy for new 50s, right?

I could have sworn I told you this ;)
Shh, shh. Just go with it. The chintacle can sense fear.

You could come play wow. ;)
If you want to stop being called on your bad behavior, stop behaving badly.
  • How do the warzones (is that it?) compare to BGs in WOW? Not just "which are more fun" but what key differences are there, are there any parallels, etc. Just curious. Also, there is no arena, correct?
  • There's no flag carrying. Huttball is fun as hell, about passing, with hazards to die in; probably my favorite one. Alderaan Civil War is a three point cap battle like a limited AB. Voidstar is a "plant the bomb on the door" scenario with multiple doors, two to each room, and a couple of bridges to fight over. The warzones are much better thought out than WoW's "hey let's do another flag carrying pvp zone" attempts. I guess what I'm saying is, I hate flag carrying ;)

There's no arena, but ranked Warzones are on the horizon; no one quite knows what that means. I'm hoping they don't miss the boat like WoW did, requiring effectively a ten man arena team rather than letting you queue solo or a group.

  • Huttball is pretty much flag carrying.... but you can toss it to other people, except you toss it in an AOE, not directly to a person, so it is pretty easy to get intercepted if anyone is paying attention. If our team has the ball, I run forward to be in place for a pass, but at lvl 50 I have to pretty much pass it again instantly before I get stunlocked and torn apart in 5 seconds. BTW, it is not at all obvious, but the ball tossing capability is actually an ability, in the first tab (where your fleet pass is, in the spellbook type thing).

I agree that of the three warzones, huttball is the most fun, because the use of strategy can actually help you win the game. The other 2 are just node based slugfests, and if you don't have a nice set of PvP gear the best you can hope to do is distract a node defender long enough for someone else to do something useful. I will usually just harpoon a defender as far away from the node as I can, then run, hoping they follow me. Sadly, the way gearing up works, it seems much more important to worry about farming medals for healing, damage output, or protection. Oddly, scoring or passing to someone that scores doesn't seem to influence the medals or rewards, though I think you may get a bit more valor or commendations if your team wins.

My noob understanding of the system is that to get the base level PvP set (Centurion) you need around 29 Champion Bags, and you get 2 of them per day and another 6 bags per week from weekly quests, so around 2 weeks if you do all the PvP quests, every day, including the outdoor stuff I think, which is terrible right now. You then have a long grind to get to valor level 60 to get the higher level gear, at which point you can start another grind to get a full set of that gear (111 Champion Bags or 52 Battle Master Bags, which still confuses me). It is much better than the pre-patch chaos, where you got fewer tokens, but a chance to get a random, possibly useless piece of gear). You can also buy bags with warzone commendations, by trading some of them for mercenary commendations for some confusing reason, but this isn't exactly fast.
  • The PvP stuff has some fairly unpleasant problems at this point -

    - the PvP stat (expertise) makes players both sturdier and harder-hitting which means as a fresh 50 you are mincemeat until you gear up. This gap is similar to, oh, I dunno, BC WoW and takes about as long to close. As Emtu said, the rewards are a bit skewed and it is not fun, although some initial small steps were just taken to fix it.

    - Any performance or input-responsiveness problems you might have run into are worse in PvP. Not just because of the fast-paced nature of PvP itself but they also just get worse. This even seems to happen to people with liquid nitrogen-cooled, 982204.3 GPU rigs.

The latter, in particular, is what keeps me from both endgame/PvP and in the enjoyable but single-playerish leveling. I am not expecting to jump, turn 180, shoot, cc, and interrupt 3 players before I land but the game is slow. Strangely, changing the settings does not affect this at all.
  • Have you tried after today's patch? My machine isn't the greatest and I'm fine in PvP with it.

As for the gearing, I've gotta disagree. I was able to gear Mal in a full suit of pvp gear, most of it champion, in the space of two weeks. You will never, ever, be able to gear as fast in WoW with decent stuff.

I haven't yet, so hopefully there will be an improvement. It's probably going to take several improvements - the performance issues are really odd in that they seem to affect people across the entire spectrum of machine capabilities. And there are people with older machines that don't run into fun-devouring troubles.

Well, it's possible I'm just more familiar with WoW but it takes a lot less than two weeks for me to put a toon in full honour gear which is quite usable in random BGs. There's also the choice of crafting, additionally other slots can be quite easily (again, in significantly less than 2 weeks) be filled with perfectly acceptable PvE gear. But this is very much a side-issue - I'd happily get splattered for a couple of weeks to gear up if toon responsiveness didn't have me screaming something in Bulgarian about someone's mother the entire time.

Just think, Guild Wars 2 will have no gear grind for the (BG) pvp! Equal footing on that, then it's up to your playing skills and not a gear imbalance to win. YAY!
  • I'm inclined to post complaining that all the hot chicks in MMORPGs are not actually played by hot chicks so that thujo can assure me that in GW2, they totally will be!
  • HOT LADIES!
  • maybe HOT BLOODED LADIES!

Ok, is this thread successfully derailed or what?

Not only will they be real hot chicks, they will also all be HRONK'S SISTER!
  • That only calls for
